What is a trojan?
A trojan refers to a program that appears as something you may think is safe but hidden inside is usually something harmful such a virus or worm. These so called trojans are usually disguised as pictures, downloadable games or other executable programs. When you execute (run) the program, this is when the trojan gets to work. Many trojans simply cause annoyance such as displaying pop ups every 5 seconds, restarting your computer and other such annoyances. However a worm or virus will usually cause damage to your system.
There are also programs called backDoors. These also find their way onto your computer in the form of a trojan and open up a port (door) on your computer for a hacker to gain access. These hackers can then snoop around your computer system, examine files, eject your CD drive, turn your display upside down, send abusive messages, switch your web cam on and send the video to themselves. What a hacker can do to your machine doesn't bare thinking about.
What is a Virus?
The sole purpose of a virus is to destroy your data. This data may be important data to you such as the "my documents" folder or important system files such as Windows itself. Virus files can delete whole sections of your hard disk and cause unrecoverable errors. What is a Worm?
A worm is generally a program or a piece of code, more often than not received via eMail as an attachment. When you open such attachments, these worms hunt for eMail addresses on your computer then tried to replicate itself by sending the worm on to all of your contacts. It worms its way around the internet. A worm can also have virus files attached which can cause even more damage. If you use eMail heavily or are part of a larger organisation, the effects can be detrimental, possibly sending eMail onto thousands of users.
