Typically, if a hard drive fails, you'll find that you are unable to continue working, With RAID implemented, it's actually possible to continue working. This is because data is written across several disks rather than just one. Some RAID levels allow you to remove a faulty disk whilst leaving your users unaffected.
RAID is particularly useful for critical machines and servers.
